Mid-term Environmental Plan
Mid-term Environmental Plan
To further advance our environmental management toward achieving both environmental and economic goals, we have established Double Eco-Efficiency as our corporate vision for 2010. This means that we are striving to double our eco-efficiency - which we define as company value divided by environmental impact - over our fiscal 2000 level. The Konica Minolta Group has developed a Mid-term Environmental Plan, a rolling plan that stipulates specific programs for realizing the above aim. The Plan is reviewed annually, taking into account the previous year's results and changes in social trends, while prioritizing Measures to Prevent Global Warming, Initiatives to Help Establish a Recycling-based Society, and Minimization of Chemical Risks. In fiscal 2005, we reviewed the Plan, with “worldwide,” “lifecycle” and “total reduction” as keywords.
To help prevent global warming, Konica Minolta has targeted a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by fiscal 2010 (as compared to the 2000 level) throughout the product lifecycle, from production and distribution to use. To ensure that we achieve this goal, reduction targets are set, respectively, for the following three parameters: CO2 emissions from sites in Japan, from manufacturing sites outside Japan, and during product use. Particularly with regard to CO2 emissions from domestic sites, the importance of global warming-preventive measures has been further emphasized by implementation of the Kyoto Protocol; we work to curb CO2 emissions systematically, by obtaining emission credits and by other means.
To help advance the creation of a recycling-based society, the Konica Minolta Group has targeted a 20% reduction in total waste emissions from business sites worldwide by fiscal 2010, as compared with fiscal 2000 levels. We have also established zero-emission targets for manufacturing sites in Japan and overseas, so as to globally promote environmental impact minimization and loss reduction.
In terms of minimizing chemical risks, we have established as our target the reduction of total atmospheric emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to one-tenth of fiscal 2000 levels (risk conversion). At the same time, we continue to minimize the environmental risks posed by chemical substances, by achieving respective preferential reduction goals for dichloromethane and other chemical substances.

Results for Fiscal 2005
As part of our efforts to help prevent global warming, Konica Minolta has created a scenario for achieving “7% reduction of CO2 emissions from Group business sites in Japan by fiscal 2010, as compared to fiscal 1990 levels.” Our target of 7% reduction in CO2 emissions is higher than the target Japan must meet under the Kyoto Protocol. Konica Minolta has also implemented an Energy-Conservation Support Program to reinforce its energy-saving activities. Under the Program, we have come up with some 500 measures for energy conservation. Through these measures, we expect that Konica Minolta can reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 30,000 tons by fiscal 2010. In conjunction with these efforts, as a complementary measure Konica Minolta has made preparations for acquiring emission credits, and has developed a program for emission credit assessment.
As for the initiatives toward helping establish a recycling-based Society, now that the final two sites have met Level 1 criteria, all our manufacturing sites in Japan have attained Level 1 zero emissions. Moreover, in addition to the three sites that attained Level 2 zero emissions in fiscal 2004, two sites reached Level 2 in fiscal 2005. Level 2 is more difficult to attain than Level 1; Level 2 sets targets for reducing the volume of waste disposed of externally. Through these zero emission efforts, the cumulative effects of our cost reduction amounted to 1.9 billion yen.
Regarding the minimization of chemical risks, each business site achieved its respective targets for atmospheric VOC emissions, enabling the entire Konica Minolta Group to realize a 72% reduction of total atmospheric emissions (risk conversion), as compared to fiscal 2000 levels.
As to reduction in specific heavy metals used in our products, we implemented programs for phasing out use of these heavy metals in all our products, giving priority to RoHS-designated products. As a result, we have already phased out their use in all products subject to the RoHS Directive.
